Changes Likely Coming To DeWine's Gun Bill

The gun bill supported by Gov. Mike DeWine and introduced in October is likely to see some changes before it reaches the Ohio Senate for a vote.

Senate Bill 221 seeks to expand court authority to remove firearms from people considered a threat and to increase background checks before private gun sales.

It鈥檚 already had three hearings, with testimony from the bill鈥檚 supporters, in the Senate鈥檚 Government Oversight and Reform Committee.

The committee鈥檚 chairman, Bill Coley (R 鈥 Hamilton) said there will be amendments, but there is agreement on some, less controversial parts of the bill.

鈥淢aking sure people who are in a mental health crisis get help,鈥 Coley said. 鈥淧eople who are inside a hospital receiving mental health crisis help don't need a gun with them. And I support making sure law enforcement has accurate information at every moment.鈥

He added it鈥檚 too early to tell whether the measures for gun removal and expanded background check will survive.

鈥淚 mean you're talking about universal background checks - that's a joke if the information is not accurate,鈥 Coley said. 鈥淎nd the information is currently not accurate.鈥

The bill鈥檚 author, Sen. Matt Dolan (R 鈥 Chagrin Falls) said he鈥檚 optimistic that the bill will make it through intact once enough legislators are educated on what鈥檚 in it.

鈥淚'm hoping people get more and more comfortable and realize that not every gun bill is a violation of Second Amendment right and you don't have to ban guns to increase the ability to create a safer environment for kids and on the streets and for everyone,鈥 Dolan said.

Dolan said he plans to submit some changes in wording, including that people with a drug addiction will only be forced into treatment if they are a risk of violence.

The Senate Government Oversight and Reform Committee will hear testimony from opponents of the bill before amendments and a vote.
